Daniel took first place in the regional SKMEA solo and ensemble competition performing the first movement of the sonata by Eric Ewazon. His chamber ensemble also took first place. Congrats, Daniel, off to state competition!

Congratulations to Anson for winning the 2018 Commencement Bay Regional Solo and Ensemble Competition of the WMEA.

This year the trumpet studio took the top two spots at the WMEA Commencement Bay regional solo and ensemble competition. Josh Henson took top honors and will be going to state performing the first movement of the Sonata for Trumpet by Eric Ewazen. Jacob Shaffer, pictured left, took second place performing the first movement of Masks by Dana Wilson.

Nicholas Orndoff competed in the Seattle giving an excellent performance of Rustiques by Eugene Bozza. His brass quintet won a chamber category performing Canzona Bergemasca by Samuel Scheidt.

Kira Newell was accepted on early decision as a trumpet performance major at Northwestern University to begin in the fall of 2016. Kira came to me last year to prepare for college auditions after receiving excellent instruction from Chuck Colburn and has a great future on trumpet ahead of her.

Congratulations to a graduate of the studio, Eliza Block, currently at St Olaf College, who was just accepted to the National Syphmony Orchestra Summer Institute with a full scholarship.

Congratulations also to high school sophomore, Ben Sahlin, lead trumpet of the Roosevelt Jazz Band, who will be traveling to New York to compete at Essentially Ellington.

Congratulations to Jacob Shaffer who won the Commencement Bay solo and ensemble competition and to Alex Moore who was runner up!

Congratulations to Nicholas Orndoff whose brass quintet took third place at the WMEA State Competition.

Nicholas Orndoff was accepted to the All Northwest Band and Jacob Shaffer was placed in the All State Orchestra. Congratulations on this recognition of your hard work! This past September, Ben Sahlin won the lead trumpet chair of the famous Roosevelt Jazz Band!

Last year Nicholas was placed in the All State Orchestra and Jacob into the All State Band, though I forgot to brag about them at that time.

Greg Simon is off to Michigan

Puget Sound alum, Greg Simon, is off to the University of Michigan to pursue a doctorate in composition. Still an active jazz trumpeter, Greg is a great composer; check out his music: www.gregsimonmusic.com

Studio sweeps Commencement Bay solo and ensemble competition

Congratulations to Eliza Block, Andrew Murphy, and Jacob Shaffer for coming in first, second and third in the Commencement Bay WMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest; the studio sweeps once again.

2012

Eliza Block accepted to both Oberlin and St. Olaf, among others; time to make a decision!
Eliza Block wins the Tacoma Youth Symphony concerto competition with the first movement of the trumpet concerto by JN Hummel. Congratulations Eliza!

Adam Morrell moves to Stadium High School

In August Adam Morrell accepted the position of band director at Stadium High School. Stadium has a long history of exceptional music making; I know that Adam will continue that tradition!

2011

Peter Nelson King is off to Boston University for his masters degree!

2010

Kelby Hawthorn won the Commencement Bay WMEA Solo and Ensemble Competition performing the concerto by Alexandra Pakhmutova. Eliza Block took second alternate. Congrats to both of you on excellent performances.

2009

Peter Nelson-King wins the Puget Sound Concerto Competition!. He will perform the first movement of the Hummel trumpet concert with the University Symphony in the spring of 2010.


Oscar Thorp was accepted at Eastman, Boston University, St. Olaf, Lawrence University and Oberlin; he will major in trumpet performance at Oberlin.
Neil Hulbert was offered large scholarships at Lawrence and St Olaf--Neil chose St. Olaf. Anna Chow received a full scholarship to study at Brigham Young University.

Neil Hulbert won the trumpet category at WMEA state competition. Neil Hulbert and Oscar Thorp won the small brass ensemble division.

Once again the trumpet studio swept the Commencement Bay Regional Solo and Ensemble Contest:

Oscar and Neil also won the small brass ensemble division performing the Concerto for Two Trumpets by Antonio Vivaldi
Chris Hildenbrand won the Mountain Regional Solo and Ensemble.

Greg Simon '07 was selected for an "Iron Composer" competition. He will travel from Denver to Oklahoma to compete in "speed composing." www.gregsimonmusic.com
Jared Tanner was accepted at Boston University and the University of Washington for graduate studies.
Brian Kibler received a 1 rating and took first alternate in the Valley Regional Solo and Ensemble contest.
Oscar Thorp won the Commencement Bay regional solo and ensemble competition. Neil Hulbert is first alternate in the Commencement Bay solo and ensemble competition.
Neil Hulbert, Kristen Monk and Oscar Thorpe won the small brass  ensemble division of the Commencement Bay regional solo and ensemble competition playing a trumpet trio by Tomasi; they took second place in the WMEA state competition. 
Neil Hulbert, Kristen Monk--on horn--and Oscar Thorp won the Commencement Bay regional solo and ensemble competition in the large brass ensemble category performing Victor Ewald's Quintet no 1. They went on to the WMEA state competition and won. Yes, Kristen Monk competed successfully on both trumpet and horn.

2007

Neil Hulbert and Kyle Deline are chosen as co-principals of the Tacoma Youth Symphony Orchestra; Oscar Thorpe wins the second chair.
Greg Simon begins graduate studies in Composition and Jazz Trumpet at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
